COMPANY OVERVIEW

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is the union for current professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Established in 1954, the NBPA’s mission is to ensure that the rights of NBA players are protected and that every conceivable measure is taken to assist players in maximizing their opportunities and achieving their goals, both on and off the court.

Whether it is negotiating a collective bargaining agreement, prosecuting a grievance on a player’s behalf or counseling a player on benefits and educational opportunities, the NBPA advocates on behalf of the best interest of all NBA players.

As a result of the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NBA, NBPA retained their own group Licensing Rights, effective July 1st, 2017. As such, NBPA has established, a for-profit Licensing and Marketing subsidiary wholly owned by NBPA, called THINK450, the innovation engine of the NBPA

Position Summary

This newly created position is based in New York, NY and reports to the SVP Grassroots Basketball & Business Development. The Manager, Grassroots & Facility Events will be responsible for event activation and supporting the development and execution of two key areas for Think450:

  • Revenue Opportunities – Develop and drive business growth for NBPA facility events and generate event opportunities, sponsorship assets and event revenue. Create/Produce business development opportunities that grow our brand through experiential programs using our state-of-the-art facility and in market with players when available.
  • Grassroots Basketball– Focus on executing youth basketball events and new programs, producing high profile experiences, and grassroots partnership opportunities that generate community impact, drive revenue, support the involvement of our members, and builds the NBPA brand.

Responsibilities:

Revenue Generation

  • Generate event rental revenue through various outreach channels (Cold calls to key brands, NYC research for incoming event opportunities, work with referral and special event agencies and prospect clients).
  • Create event target lists/prospects and manage outreach to generate new business.
  • Research, analyze, and develop special event revenue generating opportunities with brands and partners looking to activate player appearances, meet & greets, product launches, movie screenings, signings etc. at the NBPA Facility,
  • Schedule and assist with facility tours for prospective revenue-generating clients.
  • Assist the SVP of Business Development with new Fantasy Camp program development and execution for adult participation ‘pay to play’ revenue programs.

Grassroots & Facility Events

  • Responsible for executing 3rd Party facility events including NBPA Grassroots youth basketball, clinic, and NBPA court rental experiences, activations and programs including the management of load in, set up, load out and breakdown teams, vendor and event staff management.
  • Manage event logistics which may include assist vendors load in/load out, create guest lists, registration process, waiver management, set up/breakdown etc.
  • Work with event planners, vendors, clients and the Operations Department on providing event insurance documents, permits, Insurance/COIs, securing caterer, alcohol permits, vendor code of conduct forms, audio and visual setup and needs.
  • Manage database growth across all events, programs and activities, as well as identifying and executing additional onboarding opportunities to grow brand awareness and following.
  • Collaborate with Digital and Communications teams to develop content from grassroots and business development events and programs.
  • Track and log Facility event sign-ups and payments. Maintain a master database of participants’ information in new CRM system.
  • Responsible to process program payments with finance department.
  • Disseminate events calendar and recaps.

Department & Operational Functions

  • Assist SVP with the management of grassroots and business development program budgets. Log and track program or event expenses. Manage invoices and payment process for vendors with finance and department Administrative support staff. Submit purchase orders and process invoices with finance, while managing costs against individual project budgets.
  • Manage customer service and fulfillment efforts relative to event participants including answering phone calls, replying to emails and resolving program registration issues.
  • Manage Department Intern and part time Independent Contractors for events/programs (Coaches, DJs, Trainers etc).
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders across all NBPA departments to develop new Grassroots and Business Development programs.
  • Manage event logistics and assist with event execution for revenue-generating NBPA camps, clinics, tournaments, third-party events, and other new business opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Key Experiences / Achievements
    • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in NBA marketing, sales, fan development, marketing partnerships and sponsorships, field marketing and revenue generation programs. Bachelor's Degree Required.
    • Working knowledge of strategic marketing, sponsorships and promotions.
    • Working knowledge and understanding of community-based organizations and government relations in NYC.
    • Knowledge/proven experience of how to generate revenue to support programs.
    • The ability to develop and maintain business relationships to achieve business objectives.
    • Experience in budget and expense management.
  • Management Skills
    • Ability to work with and manage high profile talent, NBA players, alumni and legends.
    • Understanding of the sports environment and league relationships.
    • Capable of strategic planning, ownership and execution of programs.
    • Understanding of the sports environment with professional basketball specialization.
    • A deep understanding and linkage to national grassroots community based organizations (CBOs), grassroots, public sector agencies as well as key youth basketball organizations.
    • Proven ability to manage a staff and work within a team environment.
  • Technical / Functional Competencies
    • Excellent oral communication skills, sharp analytical skills, good judgment, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high demands and tight time constraints.
    • A proven track record implementing sports related community projects.
    • Knowledge of the NBA, WNBA, D-League and sports industry.

A big success of the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NBA, is that the NBPA has retained their own group Licensing Rights, effective July 1, 2017. As such, the NBPA established THINK450, a for-profit Licensing and Marketing business wholly owned by the NBPA and its members, the Players. This entity works to maximize revenue, among other areas, through various commercial licensing, marketing and sponsorship endeavors, content creation and distribution, and owned and operated events.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice President, Brand Partnerships, the Manager, Brand Partnerships will serve as the primary account manager executing brand sponsorship elements and deliverables. This position will assist in day-to-day brand partner relationships by acting as an account manager in the development of innovative sports marketing programs and activations for brand partners and NBA players. Key areas of focus of the role will be in managing different processes and logistics; gathering and presenting marketplace intelligence; and account and project management. This role will also be responsible for communicating and executing against partner’s brand needs, determining objectives and success metrics and collaborating with internal divisions to ensure plans are presented and delivered on time and on budget. The position requires experience and skills in, project/account management, brand sponsorships, the b2b sales process, building strategic alliances and relationships, brand and player/talent relations, and experiential execution. In addition, it will be important to understand the sports industry. This position will be performed predominantly in the New York office but may require light travel.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as account manager of brand partnership accounts to ensure long-term success and revenue growth. Provide day-to-day client servicing to brand partners, media partners and other related sponsorships to ensure long-term success, continuous revenue growth, activations and that all assets are fully leveraged and maximized.
  • Proactively communicate with agency and brand partners to explore and expand opportunities. Gain understanding of client’s organization, business drivers, and services needs and communicate the same to internal teams to assist in the sale of sponsorship programs.
  • Act as primary business and relationship point of contact for brand partners. Develop, nurture and monitor effective communication channels with brand partners and internal teams to support THINK450 and brand partner goals. Handle and support brand partner requests and triage any issues to a timely resolution.
  • Manage mutual contract fulfillment, which includes liaising with internal teams and Players to ensure delivery of NBPA, THINK450 or Player assets and accounts receivable.
  • Assist and support in driving new partner acquisition and engagement tools to track outreach and build pipeline inclusive of website content, B2B CRM, and data optimization to deliver high-margin/profit revenue opportunities. Develop and maintain a weekly/monthly status report and dashboard and present/distribute to THINK450 senior management team.
  • Serve as brand steward and contributing member of the team providing critical thinking to drive the THINK450 business forward. Engage cross-functional teams to cultivate strong talent and a world-class brand marketing organization. Network & collaborate with key stakeholders across THINK450, NBPA, Players, external brand partners, media partners, etc. to support priority projects and ensure everyone's focus remains on the mission of being players first.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in marketing, business or related field required.

JOB EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • 5+ years integrated marketing, account management, and/or brand partnerships experience.
  • Ability to articulate informed point of view and influence across the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in bringing concepts to life through executional excellence.
  • Effective and persuasive communication skills with all levels of executives, management and staff - in person, on the phone and in writing.
  • Must have ability to develop and maintain relationships.
  • Self-starter, will take initiative with new projects with ability to make cold calls.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Google based platforms and applications, Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and Keynote or InDesign presentation skills would be a major plus.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple work streams and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong problem solving, relationship building, and negotiation skills.
  • Passion for sports and experience working with sports teams and/or leagues preferred.
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to translate into an executable plan.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position will work closely with the EVP and VP, Licensing in leading the digital products category. This individual will be responsible for managing the day to day product development of existing digital licensees such as 2K and EA, and various other mobile gaming licensees and will play a key role in identifying new digital and technology-based licensees to drive maximum revenue growth to support company financial goals. The ideal candidate will be able to lead multiple digital initiatives globally. They will be a strategic thinker, collaborator, and have a track record of success in consumer product licensing, both domestic and international.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the day to day business and creative contact for the portfolio of various global licensees and work closely with them to develop and launch NBA Player products into the digital marketplace. Ensure that the product quality meets all industry standards and NBA player brand requirements.
  • Identify new digital licensing partners and product categories. Research, pitch and negotiate deals for new contracts. Explore both traditional and non-traditional opportunities in the digital and technology space.
  • Work closely with licensees to develop appropriate marketing activities for digital product launches which align with company objectives.
  • Ensure licensee compliance of all contractual terms (i.e. adhering to payment schedules, approval procedures, meeting key marketing terms).
  • Work with THINK450 legal on all matters relating to the licensing of NBA Player rights to third party manufacturers including contract negotiation and the policing of unofficial licenses goods in the marketplace.
  • Collaborate effectively across the organization and garner support from internal teams to support business needs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • MUST have 5-7 years of video game and/or mobile game consumer product licensing experience
  • Experience in the full product development life cycle of gaming/digital products
  • Command of retail math and analyzing sales data
  • Savvy executive with experience in dealing with conflict resolution
  • A strong cultural fit with a collaborative style
  • BA/BS degree required, MBA preferred
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Travel required
